Not everyone can wear a spider. This one is for the person who absolutely can.

This is a vintage gold tone figural spider brooch — and it is completely, unapologetically wonderful. The body is a large oval cabochon in deep fuchsia pink glass, catching the light with a glassy, luminous depth that shifts between raspberry and magenta depending on how it falls. The thorax is set with a single round paste stone in vivid emerald green, millegrain set in a delicate gold tone bezel that gives it a quality far above the average costume piece. Eight wire legs radiate from the thorax in the characteristic spread of a resting spider, each one individually formed and textured — and above them, two curved antennae and a pair of tiny bead eyes complete the portrait with enormous charm.

Worn on a dark lapel, a coat collar or a scarf, it stops people in their tracks. It is exactly the kind of piece that prompts the question — where on earth did you find that? The answer, as always, is North Yorkshire.

The style and construction point firmly to the 1960s or 1970s — the era of bold figural costume jewellery, when a well-chosen brooch was considered the finishing touch that elevated an outfit entirely. Spider and insect brooches of this quality from that period are increasingly sought by collectors and wearers of vintage jewellery alike, and this one — with its generous stone, its confident construction and its complete lack of apology — is among the better examples we have come across.

Condition: Very good. The gold tone retains its warmth and colour throughout. The fuchsia pink glass body is intact with excellent depth and lustre. The emerald green thorax stone is bright and secure. All eight legs are present and undamaged. The pin mechanism to the reverse is functional. No maker's mark and not precious metal — offered as gold tone costume jewellery and priced accordingly. A piece in excellent wearable condition.

About this piece: Figural insect jewellery has never really gone out of fashion — it has simply cycled between mainstream and cult, and right now it is very firmly having its moment. A well-made vintage spider brooch with coloured glass stones is the kind of thing that sells in seconds to the right person. You know who you are.
