A proper Victorian gem — this mahogany Purdonium coal scuttle brings timeless fireside elegance straight from the drawing rooms of the late 19th century. Named after the refined enclosed design that kept coal dust and mess firmly out of sight (first appearing around 1847, with the name playfully derided as mock-classical), it's the sophisticated alternative to a plain bucket: hinged shaped top for tidy access, fall-front opening to the storage compartment with removable metal liner, and that all-important original brass scoop with turned wooden handle nestling in its holder.
Crafted in warm, richly figured mahogany with ornate brass fittings — diamond plaque with central boss and foliate motifs, reinforcing mounts, hinges, and the handsome carry handle topped with a ribbed wooden grip — it was made for parlours where appearance mattered as much as practicality. The integrated scoop (brass bowl riveted, handle matching the carry one) is a rare survivor; many examples lost theirs long ago, making this completeness a real draw for collectors. Ideal now for logs, kindling, magazines, or as a striking decorative piece that tells its own story of Victorian ingenuity.
Physically a compact, well-proportioned beauty: solid mahogany throughout with deep patina; brass hardware gleaming under soft tarnish; scoop fits snugly; liner intact for easy cleaning. Approximate dimensions suit any hearthside (height ~35–40cm, width ~30–35cm, depth ~20–25cm — measure precisely if needed).
Condition is very good with authentic character: mahogany shows lustrous grain and minor surface knocks/scuffs from gentle use over 120+ years; brass has pleasing aged patina without damage or heavy wear; hinges firm, lid and front secure; scoop undamaged and original; no cracks, losses, or repairs evident. A solid, honest example ready to shine again.
About this piece: Circa 1880–1900, this mahogany Purdonium exemplifies late Victorian refinement — sought after for its decorative brass, wood quality, and especially the matching scoop that elevates it from common scuttles.
