A signed piece in mint condition is a rare thing in vintage costume jewellery — and this one has been kept immaculately.

This is a gold tone openwork rose stick pin by Sarah Coventry, the celebrated American costume jewellery company founded in 1949 and sold exclusively through home parties hosted by women known as Fashion Directors. At the height of their popularity in the 1960s and 1970s — the most collectible period of their output — Sarah Coventry was selling tens of millions of pieces annually, and their reputation rested on better-than-average construction, notably heavier plating than most competitors, and designs that balanced accessibility with genuine style.

This piece is a beautiful example of both. The rose head is rendered in openwork gold tone metal — layers of spiralling petals built up into a convincingly three-dimensional bloom, every petal defined and crisp. Below it runs a curved stem with two finely textured leaves, the veining detailed and confident. The whole thing is mounted on a long stick pin with a ball-end stopper — a format worn through a lapel, scarf, hat or cravat, and very much having a fashion moment again among younger vintage buyers who have rediscovered the art of the statement pin. The piece is signed to the reverse with the Sarah Cov mark, confirming its authenticity and placing it firmly in the prime collecting period of the brand.

Condition: Mint. This piece shows no wear whatsoever — the gold tone is bright and even throughout, the pin is straight and functional, and there is no loss, tarnishing or scratching of any kind. For a piece of this age that is genuinely exceptional and makes it significantly more desirable to the serious collector.

About this piece: Sarah Coventry jewellery from the 1960s and 1970s is actively collected on both sides of the Atlantic, and signed pieces in mint condition command the highest prices within the range. The openwork rose is one of the most enduringly appealing motifs in the catalogue — elegant, feminine and entirely wearable today pinned to a jacket lapel, a winter coat or a silk scarf.
