Some medals celebrate battles won. This one celebrates kindness in action.

This elegant Royal Masonic Hospital Steward’s Jewel was awarded to a brother who actively supported the Royal Masonic Hospital — one of the most significant charitable projects undertaken by Freemasons in the 20th century.

Freemasons have long been quietly famous for their practical charity. In the years after the First World War they built and ran their own hospital in London, dedicated to caring for Freemasons, their wives and their children when they were ill or in need. The hospital became a symbol of the Craft’s commitment to looking after its own. To help fund its work, provinces across the country appointed Stewards — men who committed serious time and effort to raising money through events, appeals and personal persuasion. Those who succeeded were presented with this distinctive jewel as a mark of honour.

The design is both beautiful and deeply symbolic. On the oval medal, the figure of Charity leans forward to offer a bowl to a kneeling, injured or sick man — a powerful image of humanity caring for the vulnerable. Above them sits a Star of David, and the Latin motto curves around the scene:

“AEGROS SANAT HUMANITAS” (“Kindness / Humanity Heals the Sick”).

In the bottom right corner is the mark C.L.D. — the signature of C.L.J. Doman, the sculptor and medallist who designed this piece. It is finished in rich gilt and enamel and is suspended from its original dark blue ribbon with a light blue stripe. The piece retains its full pin and suspension fittings and shows only light, honest wear consistent with careful use over many decades.

A moving and tangible reminder of real charitable work — the kind of object that once sat proudly on a man’s lapel after months of effort to help the sick and the suffering.
