What an absolute charmer — this handmade studio pottery marmalade pot brings instant warmth and whimsy to any shelf or kitchen table. The warm oatmeal glaze covers a sturdy thrown jar, accented by hand-incised spiral swirls that wrap the body like tree rings, while a bold, naive "marmalade!" (exclamation and all) dances across the front in freehand lettering full of personality.
The lid sits neatly with a gallery fit, crowned by a sculpted mouse finial — tiny ears pricked, tail curled, eyes alert — a playful touch that turns a simple preserve jar into something quite special. This is classic mid-20th-century British studio pottery: post-war makers blending function with folk-art delight, often in small rural workshops. Note that these pots sometimes originally came with a little spoon; this one is missing its spoon, but the piece remains delightful for display, holding preserves, or as a tiny treasure jar.
Physically compact and tactile: stoneware/earthenware body with thick walls; mottled glaze showing lovely variation and subtle crazing; mouse knob hand-modelled and secure; overall proportions ideal for the breakfast tray.
Condition is very good with authentic character: glaze bright and intact; no chips, cracks, or damage visible; lettering crisp; minor handling marks and patina enhance the handmade feel. A solid, endearing example ready to delight.
About this piece: These mid-century studio pottery jars (circa 1960s–1980s), with their hand-modelled animal finials and freely incised labels, capture the very heart of Britain’s post-war craft movement — small independent workshops turning everyday kitchenware into little works of quiet joy. That alert little mouse perched on the lid is the star turn: a tiny spark of mischief and warmth that makes you smile every time you catch his eye. He’s not a famous character, just a perfectly charming anonymous fellow who brings real personality to the pot. Personally sourced and honestly described by our small team here in North Yorkshire, he companions beautifully with other kitchen curios and curious finds, ready to settle happily on any shelf or breakfast table.
