A Victorian Trilogy — Folio Society Edition

Asa Briggs | Victorian People, Victorian Cities, Victorian Things | 3 Volume Set | Fine Condition

Few historians understood the Victorian age as thoroughly as Asa Briggs. Over the course of three landmark works — Victorian People, Victorian Cities and Victorian Things — he built what remains the most comprehensive and readable portrait of nineteenth century Britain ever written. Not dry academic history but vivid, absorbing social history that brings an extraordinary era back to life.

This 1996 Folio Society edition gathers all three volumes into one beautifully produced set. Victorian People examines the personalities and ideas that shaped an age. Victorian Cities explores the dramatic transformation of Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, London and beyond. Victorian Things turns its attention to the objects of everyday Victorian life — postage stamps, telephones, typewriters, spectacles, fashion, domestic furnishings — and finds in them a whole civilisation.

The production is everything you would expect from the Folio Society at its best. Three volumes in striking burgundy cloth with elaborate gilt and multicolour decorative blocking, numerous colour and black and white plates throughout, and housed in a sturdy matching pictorial slipcase. A substantial and impressive set that looks magnificent on a shelf.

Condition: Fine throughout. Pages clean and bright with no foxing, marks or inscriptions. Bindings tight and vibrant with minimal shelf wear. Slipcase solid with only light rubbing consistent with careful storage. A very well preserved example of a complete first Folio Society edition.

About this edition: Now out of print and increasingly difficult to find as a complete fine set with slipcase. An essential addition to any collection of Victorian history or British social history — and a genuinely handsome object in its own right.
