Puck of Pook's Hill — Folio Society Edition

Rudyard Kipling | Illustrated by H.R. Millar | 1995 First Printing | Fine Condition

One of the most beloved works in English children's literature — and a book that speaks just as powerfully to adults.

First published in 1906, Puck of Pook's Hill follows Dan and Una, two children in the Sussex countryside who accidentally summon Puck — the oldest creature in England — whilst acting out scenes from A Midsummer Night's Dream. What follows is a sequence of extraordinary encounters with figures drawn from the whole sweep of English history: a Roman centurion, a Saxon monk, a Norman knight, a Viking sea captain. Each one arrives with a story to tell, and Kipling listens to them all with the patience and imagination of a writer at the very height of his powers.

This 1995 Folio Society first printing is a handsome edition. The attractive orange and gold pictorial cloth binding with blocked illustration and gilt lettering is immediately appealing, H.R. Millar's original 1906 illustrations are reproduced faithfully throughout, and the whole thing sits in a sturdy matching slipcase. A compact, readable format that invites you to settle in and stay a while.

Condition: Fine throughout. Pages clean and bright with no foxing, marks or inscriptions. Binding tight and vibrant with minimal shelf wear. Slipcase solid with only light rubbing consistent with careful storage. A very well preserved first Folio Society printing.

About this edition: The ideal companion to the Folio Society edition of Rewards and Fairies — the sequel in which Dan and Una return for further adventures with Puck. Both volumes are available from Novel Relics and make a beautiful pair on any shelf.
