One of the great English novels of the twentieth century — and one that has never really been out of fashion.
John Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga charts the rise, rivalries and slow unravelling of a wealthy Victorian family across three generations — a dynasty united by property, divided by passion and perpetually at war with the world's inconvenient tendency to change around them. The Man of Property, In Chancery and To Let together form a complete and deeply satisfying portrait of English bourgeois life from the 1880s through to the 1920s — comic, melancholy, sharply observed and entirely human. Galsworthy was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932, and the Saga remains the centrepiece of his achievement.
This is the Folio Society's handsome 1984 edition — three volumes bound in terracotta cloth spines with gilt titles and repeated tulip vignette decoration, over decorative patterned paper boards, with black and white illustrations throughout. The books are housed together in the distinctive blue and cream patterned slipcase. Each volume sits cleanly in the hand and looks well on the shelf — this is the kind of set that improves a room simply by being in it.
Condition: Fine throughout. All three volumes are clean, unworn and free from marks or inscriptions. The bindings are firm, the gilt bright and the paper fresh. The slipcase is in near fine condition with one very small mark — noted honestly and not visible in photographs. A set that has been exceptionally well kept.
About this edition: The Forsyte Saga has been in the Folio Society catalogue repeatedly and with good reason — it is exactly the kind of sustained, serious English literary fiction the Society was created to celebrate. This 1984 set is among the more sought-after of the Folio Galsworthy editions and makes a distinguished gift for any reader who takes their shelves as seriously as their reading.
