folio-society-clarissa-richardson-2-volume-set-1993
Clarissa — The Folio Society | Samuel Richardson | 1993 | 2 Volume Set with Simon Brett Engravings | Very Good

A young woman, a fortune, a family determined to sell her into marriage, and the most charming villain in English literature.

When Samuel Richardson, a London printer, published Clarissa in 1747 and 1748, readers across Europe wrote to beg him to spare its heroine. Clarissa Harlowe is clever, devout and stubborn, and her family means to marry her to a man she despises for the sake of his money. Robert Lovelace, rake, wit and schemer, offers her a way out. What follows, told entirely in letters, is one of the great psychological novels: a battle of wills between two extraordinary people, written with a closeness to the inner life that nobody in English had attempted before.

It is also, famously, one of the longest novels in the language, and that is part of the pleasure. Richardson lets us live inside his characters' letters for weeks at a time, so that by the end we know Clarissa and Lovelace better than we know most real people. Generations of readers have found it impossible to put down and impossible to forget.

This Folio Society edition uses Angus Ross's acclaimed text, with his notes and glossary, and an introduction by the novelist Angus Wilson. It is illustrated with wood engravings by Simon Brett, one of the finest British engravers of our time, each set within an elegant ornamental frame. The two volumes, some fifteen hundred pages in all, are bound in navy cloth with shimmering green moiré sides, the spines lettered in gilt on green labels, the top edges stained navy. They come in the green Folio slipcase blocked with the Society's monogram.

Condition: Very Good. The books themselves are in fine condition: the moiré sides are bright, the spines flat and square with crisp gilt and no fading, the edges clean and the text clean throughout. The slipcase is where the age shows. It has scuffing across the front, a small surface tear near one edge and wear with slight fraying along the bottom edge, all shown in the photographs. It still does its job of protecting the books perfectly well.

About this edition: this is the second printing of 1993 of the Folio edition first published in 1991. Complete sets turn up only occasionally, and Simon Brett's engravings make this the edition of choice for anyone who wants to read Clarissa in a form worthy of it.

Extra photographs available on request. Just get in touch and we will be happy to help.

Wrapped in good heavy paper — we don't skimp on that — and packed into a sturdy box so nothing shifts on the way to you, wherever in the world that happens to be. Kat packs and checks every parcel herself, and she is not easily pleased. The unwrapping ought to be half the pleasure.

The Novel Relics Team

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0934/7887/9617/files/clarissa-the-folio-society-samuel-richardson-1993-2-volume-set-with-simon-brett-engravings-very-good-8205251.jpg?v=1792913474
